What is the 3G sunset?

The term 3G sunset refers to the process by which mobile operators are progressively shutting down the 3G network in order to reallocate spectrum to more modern technologies such as 4G and 5G.

This process responds to several reasons:

• More efficient use of radio spectrum.
• Improved performance of mobile networks.
• Reduction of operational costs associated with maintaining legacy technologies.
• Increased capacity for IoT and data services.

Although 3G has been a key technology for many years, its use is steadily declining across Europe.

Situation in Spain

In Spain, the 3G shutdown is being carried out progressively by the different mobile operators. This means that:

• There is no single national shutdown date.
• The process varies depending on the operator and geographical area.
• Some services have already been migrated or deprioritised.

In practice, this creates a mixed scenario where active networks coexist with networks being phased out, which may affect connected devices differently.

What does the 3G sunset mean for your device fleet?

One of the main challenges of the 3G sunset is that not all devices respond in the same way to the withdrawal of the network. Depending on the integrated technology, configuration and operator, the impact may vary significantly. Below, we show an indicative classification of the status of the most common devices:

Devices requiring an update (high risk): Advertisim 3G displays.

These devices depend directly on 3G connectivity and require an update or replacement to guarantee service continuity once the network is no longer available.

Devices requiring review (medium risk): GSM 3G modules.

These devices may experience variations in their performance depending on the operator, coverage and network configuration. An individual technical assessment is recommended to determine their actual level of exposure.

Devices that will continue to operate (no immediate impact).

• GSM 2G modules.
• GSM 4G modules.
• Advertisim 4G displays.

These devices do not depend on 3G or are already prepared to operate on more recent technologies, so they are not affected by the shutdown process.

Why is it important to anticipate?

The main risk of the 3G sunset is not only the disappearance of the network, but also the lack of visibility regarding which devices are actually affected within an installation.

Many companies operate with heterogeneous device fleets, installed at different times and using different technologies, which makes it difficult to have a clear view of the real impact.

• Unexpected connectivity losses.
• Service interruptions.
• Issues that are difficult to diagnose remotely.

The tenth edition of Enxarxatec Cámara Castellón 2026 once again positioned Castellón as a hub for young talent, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship. Organised by Xarxatec and held at the Castellón Chamber of Commerce, the event brought together students, educators, companies, and institutions for a day in which 14 finalist teams presented their innovative projects before a specialised jury.

As a sponsor of the event since its inception, Nayar is celebrating ten years of supporting an initiative that promotes technological vocations and connects young people with real-world challenges proposed by companies within Castellón’s digital ecosystem. This year, one of the company’s challenges led to one of the projects recognised by the jury: Flowlytics, developed by Team JS-M, which secured a place on the podium in the Vocational Training and University category.

Winning teams at Enxarxatec Cámara Castellón 2026

The projects presented addressed challenges related to technology, digitalisation, sustainability, and the improvement of a wide range of social and professional sectors. Teams competed across three categories: Primary Schools, Secondary Education and High School, and Vocational Training and University.

Primary Schools: 

• First Prize: Los Loros Tecnológicos, with F.A.P.S.A., automated drinking water fountains equipped with sensor technology.
• Second Prize: Los Creativos, with Ecopaper, a machine designed to reduce paper waste in schools.
• Third Prize: Los Tecnochanchis, with Temperofrío, a solar-powered canopy designed to mitigate high temperatures in school playgrounds.

Secondary Education and High School:

• First Prize: Grupo 6, with Future Path, a professional future simulation platform.
• Second Prize: Grupo 2, with Castell-on, a platform connecting citizens, businesses, professionals, and local activities across the city.
• Third Prize: Grupo 3, with a professional future simulation project.

Vocational Training and University: 

• First Prize: Maintik, with Kiro, a guidance platform designed to support future career development.
• Second Prize: Capa 8, with NeuroVida, a platform aimed at promoting workplace autonomy for neurodivergent individuals.
• Third Prize: Team JS-M, with Flowlytics, a spatial intelligence system that monitors visitor flows and human behaviour in real time through non-intrusive technology.

The GSR2 device supports 2G, 3G, and 4G connectivity. By default, the GSR2 incorporates an internal global SIM, which facilitates immediate deployment in different regions without the need for an external SIM, making it an ideal solution for international deployments and projects.

In addition to its ability to connect directly to certain elevator controllers, Nayar’s GSR2 device has two RJ45 communication ports that support the connection of up to two complementary units capable of interfacing with non-compatible controllers—for instance, through the new multi-voltage binary board. This greatly enhances its integration potential in complex installations. The device also includes a USB communication port and a pluggable terminal block for a proprietary communication bus. Its flexible architecture allows for seamless integration into various technical environments and meets the current demands of the sector, thanks to its compact size and DIN rail mounting capability, which streamlines the installation process—a long-standing request from the industry.

The GSR2 device is designed for continuous operation using an external power supply (not included), but it also supports autonomous operation via an internal battery, ensuring reliability and safety at all times.

Last Friday, the auditorium of Cámara de Comercio Castellón transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity, where students from primary schools, secondary schools, vocational training programs, and universities presented technological solutions designed to generate a positive impact on society.

Winning Teams.

Organized by Xarxatec, the final event showcased the 10 finalist teams, selected from dozens of submissions. Their projects addressed real-world challenges related to urban well-being, health, sustainability, and social inclusion. In the Schools and Secondary Education category, the top prize went to Pibox, a team whose innovative project enables any standard wheelchair to be converted into an electric one within minutes. Taquion and Nexus took second and third place, respectively. In the High School, Vocational Training, and University category, Q4antum won first prize with a creative solution to rediscover the city of Castellón, followed by Mktika and Codeplan. A special mention was awarded to a team of 4th-grade students from San Cristóbal School, highlighting that innovation knows no age.

Record participation and greater diversity
